The Only Steam Working Public 9 1/2 inch gauge railway in the UK!
Currently the only public, steam working 9 1/2 inch gauge railway in the UK, Lakeshore Railroad was first opened in 1972 and is still going strong to this day! Running for just under a third of a mile round the boating lake, the tracks meander through the trees and over the level crossings before arriving back at the station.
A café' can also be enjoyed on site with what is quoted as "the best view seen from a café'" due to the large open viewing of the train running by.
Open in excess of 200 days a year, do come and have a trip whether your young or just young at heart!
Do enjoy our website, more in depth detail can be found in the enthusiasts section but don't worry, if you can't find something that you want to know, do ask, we don't bite!
Spring and Steam: Reopening Monday 12th April!
As well as the usual sights and sounds of winter transitioning into spring; lighter evenings, warmer weather and greenery slowly returning to the landscape, there is also a sense of de ja vu this March. Just over a year on from the first lockdown, we have closed our doors three times and will have reopened just as many times come the 12th April, not to mention missing two Easter weekends! However, with all of our fingers crossed, this should be the last time we need to announce the return of steam to our rails.
So, without further ado, providing the government roadmap and guidance proceeds as planned, steam hauled services will resume on Monday 12th April, operating daily over the remainder of the Easter holidays until Sunday 18th April, where upon we will reduce to operating every weekend, weather providing, whilst cherry picking fine weather weekdays. Our staff and volunteers have certainly missed the sight and sound of steam so no doubt you will have too!
Back Steaming: 5th December Onwards!
Lockdown officially ends on the 2nd December, placing South Tyneside firmly into the new and improved "Tier 3". We have reviewed all of the associated guidance and are ecstatic to announce that we are able to restart operating from Saturday 5th December; returning to our usual weekend and Christmas holiday service for the remainder of the year.
We haven't been standing still during our months hiatus however; the cobwebs and skeletons of October have been replaced with tinsel and lights to welcome in the festive season. We can't wait to welcome you back for a steam hauled trip (or two) around the boating lake!
Perchance It Waketh: Reopening Saturday 4th July.
We are ecstatic to announce that Lakeshore Railroad will be reopening on SATURDAY 4th JULY. Over the past two days, some of you may well have seen a sudden flurry of activity at the railway, with engines steaming around the boating lake once more whilst being tested after three months slumber.
Behind the scenes we have been putting in place new measures to make our operation COVID secure. CONTACTLESS PAYMENTS will be available for the first time, though we will STILL BE TAKING CASH WITH CORRECT CHANGE PREFERRED. We will have a new queueing system that complies with social distancing and HAND SANITISER STATIONS will be available at each end of the platform.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
Lakeshore Railroad Temporary Closure.
Following further consideration and the most recent government advice (20th March 2020) relating to the Coronavirus Pandemic, it is with a heavy heart that we have taken the decision to TEMPORARILY close the railway with immediate effect.
For anyone who knows us well, we always endeavour to operate our railway as many days as humanly possible, even in the most adverse weather conditions when we probably should have stayed at home! However, in the current climate, we must put the health of our staff and passengers at the forefront of priorities. We will of course be reviewing the situation regularly and hope that we can soon be steaming round the boating lake once again.
