WELCOME!

The Only Steam Working Public 9 1/2 inch gauge railway in the UK!

Currently the only public, steam working 9 1/2 inch gauge railway in the UK, Lakeshore Railroad was first opened in 1972 and is still going strong to this day! Running for just under a third of a mile round the boating lake, the tracks meander through the trees and over the level crossings before arriving back at the station.

A café' can also be enjoyed on site with what is quoted as "the best view seen from a café'" due to the large open viewing of the train running by.

Open in excess of 200 days a year, do come and have a trip whether your young or just young at heart!

Do enjoy our website, more in depth detail can be found in the enthusiasts section but don't worry, if you can't find something that you want to know, do ask, we don't bite!

Normality Resumes: Steam Returns to Lakeshore

After over three months in the workshop and countless hours of work; steam has finally returned to Lakeshore metals with "Mountaineer" re-entering service just after the Easter Holidays. Fresh from an extensive mechanical overhaul and repaint, she will be heading all services from now on until "Adiela" returns from her own overhaul at some point before the Summer Holidays, all fingers crossed.

In other news, "Bert" has now returned home to Crewe after it's month long busman's holiday at the railway. We are extremely grateful to our friends at the Crewe and Weston Railway for allowing "Bert" to bolster our services during what has been a rather turbulent time. Adding a splash of blue between the Brunswick green of "Rockclimber", "Bert" proved just as popular and a different sight on our metals, albeit not steam powered. Looking back towards the home front, weekend services continue as normal, with the first cherry-picked weekdays starting to appear as the weather begins to warm up. It is worth noting we will also be operating a steam service, bolstered by "Rockclimber", on both May Bank Holidays (6th & 27th May).

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue

With Easter falling early this year, it has only been a matter of weeks since our last spate of daily running during the February Half Term. Subsequently, beginning today (Good Friday 29th March), a daily service will be operating throughout the Easter holidays until Sunday 14th April, whereby we will once again reduce to weekends before we begin cherry-picking fine weather weekdays prior to summer.

Now, visitors to the railway last Sunday may well have noticed a rather different engine in service alongside our resident Lister, "Rockclimber". Due to further unfortunate delays regarding the contracted element of "Mountaineer's" overhaul, we have kindly been lent "Bert" by our ever superb friends at the Crewe and Weston Railway, so that we can maintain the tradition of a two train service over the Easter weekend and select other days throughout the holiday. Making it's first visit North, "Bert" is the soul Roanoke locomotive on 9 1/2" gauge and means for the first time in over 50 years, we have a double diesel hauled service. Something different for sure! We are very sorry for any further inconvenience caused by this alteration to our service and hope to return to our traditional steam hauled operation within the next few weeks at latest.
