The Only Steam Working Public 9 1/2 inch gauge railway in the UK!

Currently the only public, steam working 9 1/2 inch gauge railway in the UK, Lakeshore Railroad was first opened in 1972 and is still going strong to this day! Running for just under a third of a mile round the boating lake, the tracks meander through the trees and over the level crossings before arriving back at the station.

A café' can also be enjoyed on site with what is quoted as "the best view seen from a café'" due to the large open viewing of the train running by.

Open in excess of 200 days a year, do come and have a trip whether your young or just young at heart!

Do enjoy our website, more in depth detail can be found in the enthusiasts section but don't worry, if you can't find something that you want to know, do ask, we don't bite!

A Summer To Remember: 50th Anniversary Weekend 2nd & 3rd July

On Good Friday 1972; Jack Wakefield's and Don Proudlock's acorn of an idea, ably assisted by Michael Henderson (forming our founding trio), was finally realised and the Lakeshore Railroad was born! Fifty years of existance for any miniature railway is a significant milestone and one that cannot be passed over without due appreciation. Without further ado, we would like to invite YOU to celebrate South Shields' one and only little railway, with a big heart, over the 2nd and 3rd July 2022, at our grand anniversary weekend gala!

As is to be expected, the weekend is set to be packed full of spectacles including a Saturday "Re-Opening Ceremony" at 10:30am by our esteemed friend Anthony Coulls, Senior Curator of Rail Transport at the National Railway. Museum, followed by an opening train recreation, and up to four visiting steam and diesel locomotives from across the country, including the Downs Light Railway's "Brock" and "James Boyd". For further details, head on over to our dedicated "events" page and watch our social feed for further visiting locomotive announcements!

Getting back to normality amidst the expected flurry of gala news, we are now fast approaching our main summer season. Trains will be running throughout the half-term (30th May -5th June) and thenceforth will be operating daily until mid-September, weather and circumstances providing.

Begin As You Mean To Go On: 50 Years Of Lakeshore

And so begins another new year with much the same; cold weekend running and a workshop "to-do" list longer than all of our staff's and volunteer's arms put together. However this year is far from normal, having been circled in the diary since as far back as 2012, due to it marking our (rather significant) 50th anniversary! Yes, you read that right; 50 years since we began steaming round the lake with Mountaineer and the three original coaches, carrying countless generations of families in the process. Keep an eye here and on our social media as we certainly intend to celebrate this achievement in all it's glory and will be announcing our plans shortly. Circle the first weekend of July in your calendars for now is all we can say for now.....

Back to the present however, we are currently operating our usual weekend service, weather providing as always. February Half-Term is gradually creeping closer, for which we will be operating daily from Monday 21st February until Sunday 27th February. The drift of steam looks fantastic in the crisp winter air so why not take a trip?
